The Practice Nurse Development Team

PNDT Photo for Awards 2016

This week, the Practice Nurse Development Team share why they're proud to care.

The Practice Nurse Development Team support General Practices in Liverpool by providing quality support for vacancies, long term sickness and maternity leave. However, our predominant role is to provide mentorship for the development of Practice Nurses and Health Care Assistants (HCA’s). As far as we are aware, we are currently the only team to deliver this service, so our work is very unique.

We recognise that there is a drive to move services out of secondary care into primary care and the community. This increases pressure for primary care at a time when GPs are struggling to recruit suitably qualified Practice Nurses and HCPs.  We are commissioned to support GP’s to recruit HCPs from different disciplines to build teams with a huge range of skills and knowledge, to improve the quality of services delivered by GPs.

We have created a specially-designed mentorship programme that is dedicated to developing the skills and expertise of healthcare professionals. Over the last two years, we have provided a mentorship programme to over 65 clinicians new to general practice. We have also offered support to almost 40 GP’s and nurses attending the Liverpool Cytology Course.  We continue to improve our programme in order to deliver excellence, whilst responding to the challenging environment of healthcare. We have had meetings with CCGs from several regions such as London, Halton and Sefton. They’re keen to look at our nursing model and consider implementing similar services. It’s rewarding to know that our work could be used as a model for other Trust’s.

Our work provides an important platform for the delivery of high quality care. Our goal is to provide an excellent service that will ultimately support patients as much as possible. Our mentorship programme practices evidence-based care, and focuses on developing a whole breadth of skills that remain essential to providing cost effective, high quality and efficient patient care.

Our award winning team embodies the importance of quality care in everything we do.  Each individual in our team has a depth of knowledge and skills, but more importantly, a passion for healthcare. We’re motivated to develop the incredible skills of Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants to improve the services we deliver. Our motivation and commitment is something we think inspires practices and professionals to support and get involved with.

The Practice Nurse Development Team is a unique service that constantly looks at new and effective ways of working to develop the skills of existing workforces, provide high standards of care and support our patients. Our service is one of a kind, and we’re really proud to care for those who work, and those within the community.
